GCSE Music AQA

Students are expected to perform both solo and as part of a musical ensemble.

The course requires students to explore 5 Areas of Study:

Rhythm and metre
Harmony and tonality
Texture and melody
Timbre and dynamics
Structure and form

Through 3 Strands of music:

The Western Classical Tradition
Popular Music of the 20th and 21st Century
World Music

Students also a selection of pieces based on the music they study, with their best pieces selected and submitted as coursework.

Assessments

Assessment is ongoing throughout the two years as students develop their skills in performance work.  Formal assessment takes place through both performance and composition coursework as well as a listening exam based on the 3 Strands of Music.

Useful equipment / resources

It is helpful if students have an instrument home to practice on.
