The Science Department

Welcome to the Science Department. We think that you will find all the information you need in the departments pages but here are the basics of what you and your child can expect from us.
- Every child will be taught by a subject specialist.
- Every one of the members of staff are based in one laboratory so that they are always easily locatable to help answer questions when required.
- Every child will have a monitored, targeted and engaging experience in this department, focusing on the core skills which are important to this subject, such as investigative, evaluative and methods of planning.
- The standard of behaviour in this department is made of paramount importance to ensure that all students have access to the education they are entitled to. This starts with basic qualities of a successful lesson such as seating plans and moves through a range of strategies culminating with the Head of Department being a known and recognisable figure along the corridors between lessons, and popping into lessons regularly to check on standards.
- Every child is treated with consistency and respect by all members of the staff.
- Every child will be set regular homework which will be marked and returned in a timely fashion with targets on ways to improve.
- Teachers will be available to help students with homework and a suitable time limit will be set for the completion so that this help can be accessed to ensure deadlines are kept to.
- Every child will be set a significant piece of work every half term, based on the topics they have completed and this data will be stored in our department database and will be used for tracking to make sure that the students are making good progress.
- Intervention will be put in place for all students who are not meeting their required standard by key points in the year.
What we expect from you and your child:
- Every student will be on time to lessons and dressed in accordance to the school uniform.
- No student will eat or drink in the laboratories
- No student will take away others right to an education by disrupting the class.
- All students will try to engage in the lessons and will ask questions to clarify anything they don’t understand.
- All students will come equipped to all the lessons with a pen, pencil and ruler, their diary and their book.
- All students will complete their homework by the required deadline and if they don’t they will receive a 30 minute homework detention.
- You will contact us if you have any concerns so that we may look into it and come up with a solution together.
- You will work with us and support us on all matters including homework, staffing, presentation of syllabus and lessons and behaviour to ensure that your child and those in their class are happy and succeed in this subject.
Thank you for taking the time to read the information on the department and we hope that you have found what you needed but if you did not please do not hesitate to contact the Acting Head of Department, Ian Mullenger at the following email address ian.mullenger@epschool.org.
